A cinema screen in a darkened theater

If you are wondering how liminality and film work together, ask Dr. Mary Farrell, a professor who writes and teaches about the negative space and boundaries within film from her native Spain:

Thresholds, liminal zones, and frames act as border markers, especially with special regard to the possible reactions of the subject/spectator. These images act as frames within frames, especially the archetypical frames used as thresholds to or from some imagined place – windows, doors, stairs, or hallways. The passage into and out is often interpreted through narrative or symbols. Emptiness is often a difficulty, a critical challenge for meaning.
